October is National Substance Use Prevention Month.
This month is dedicated to preventing the initiation of substance use, preventing the progression of use, and reducing the harms associated with use. The younger someone begins using alcohol or drugs, the more likely they are to develop an addiction. 9 out of 10 people who are addicted to nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs began using these substances before they were 18 years old. Other risk factors that influence addiction include family history or genetics, social/environmental factors, and mental health concerns.
The best way to prevent an addiction is to never start or delay use. Delayed use allows time for the brain to fully develop.
Fact Of The Week: The brain stops developing around 25 years old.
